PHUL Scholarship Recipients
The Pittsburgh
High School Ultimate League recognizes outstanding players, organizers
and people by awarding The PHUL Scholarship to one student-athlete
per year. Winners are selected from a pool of applicants who have
participated in the spring PHUL season and meet eligibility requirements.
2005
- Lauren Zasadil, $400
Pitt Honors
Lauren
graduated ninth in her class at Mt. Lebanon High School where she
captained both the Varsity Rifle team and Ultimate team while working
full-time to afford college. She played on Pittsburgh's co-ed club
Ultimate team, Balance of Power, for two years. Lauren captained
the High School women’s team during it's trail phase and has
captained in Pittsburgh's summer league. A National Honor Society
student, Lauren currently attends the University of Pittsburgh Honors
College with a major in molecular biology and a minor in studio
arts. She plays for Pittsburgh Women's team Danger, and continues
to give back as a permanent volunteer for PHUL.
2004 - Justin Burdett, $100
PSU
Justin
graduated with high honors from Hampton High School in May 2005
after captaining the Hampton ultimate team for two years and being
elected president of the Hampton technology club his senior year.
During his time as Hampton's captain, he wrote and presented a proposal
to the Hampton school board that allowed Hampton to be an official
club sport with a faculty coach. He was also chosen as only one
of sixty-seven scholars selected to attend the Pennsylvania Governor's
School for Information Technology hosted at the Pennsylvania State
University and was a two-year letterman for the Hampton High School
marching band. Justin currently studies Information Sciences and
Technology at Penn State and plays ultimate for the Penn State men's
team, Spank. He remains involved with PHUL and serves as the league's
Outreach Director where he has helped form several new teams, as
well as a new league, and currently serves as Central Pennsylvania's
Youth Coordinator.
